This month we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Van Cliburn winning the 1st International Tchaikovsky competition. His win was monumental to American's who were disheartened by the cold war and rocketed him into international fame. Upon Van Cliburn’s arrival to New York he was greeted by a ticker tape parade attended by 100,00 people. In discussing Van Cliburn’s legacy, The New York Times touted Mr. Cliburn’s live recording of Rachmaninoff’s Third Concerto with the Symphony of the Air as "one of the finest piano recordings ever made," and additionally singled out "his classic account of the Tchaikovsky concerto with the RCA Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kirill Kondrashin," the first classical LP to go platinum. -- Anthony Tommasini, "Cold War, Hot Pianist.
