Reggae's religious overtones may often be overshadowed by the genre's ties to ganja and the hippie movement, but such is not the case with one of the newest artists to hit the scene, a young Hasidic Jew from Crown Heights, New York, named Matisyahu (n� Matthew) Miller. Singing and rapping in English, Yiddish, and Hebrew, he's gaining quite a bit of notice, making a splash last month at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, and preparing to release a studio followup to Live At Stubbs in early 2006 (Youth). We've been touring for 4 months and listening to a lot of music along the way in pretty much every genre but polka (sorry polka). These records find their way into the player more than others and have become our soundtrack, keeping the band and I going strong. Positive, sincere, and innovative music is what it's all about--these are a must have.
