Over the rest of this week will reveal the most beautiful cars as chosen by readers of The Daily Telegraph 100-81 | 80-61| 60-41|40-21|20-1Watch reviews of the latest models
When we asked Telegraph Motoring readers to nominate the most beautiful cars of all time (in an online poll that began last autumn, alongside our reviews of the new Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and Aston Martin DBS) the response was as substantial as it was diverse. | Dream machines: over the next few days we shall reveal the most beautiful cars ever made, as voted for by our readers |
Hundreds of you argued and voted for 367 different models, although no points were awarded if you simply wrote "any 1950s Ferrari" or nominated the Vincent Black Shadow (only cars were eligible). Some nominations were very specific (and possibly mischievous – "Austin Allegro, but only in beige") but most revealed the breadth and depth of your passion for all things automotive. Thank you all for your input.
After many hours spent sifting through the stats, we can now reveal the top 100, a remarkably varied collection of curves and straight lines, old and new. If classic cars predominate, it is probably because, like great art, it takes time for a design to escape the influence of fashion and be fairly judged on its own merits; it also explains why many modern cars take older models as their inspiration.
Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is a never-ending debate. To comment on these nominations, or to add new ones, please continue to do so at the beautiful cars forum. But that's not all. Next, as an entertaining counterpoint to the most beautiful cars, we'd like to receive your nominations for the ugliest cars of all time. Ssangyong Rodius? Nash Metropolitan? Austin Allegro, but only in beige? | What's the ugliest car of all time - and does it have to be beige? Have your say below this article |
There are some real shockers out there, cars so hideous it's a wonder they were ever offered for sale, let alone bought and driven in public. Cast your votes in the box below this article and we will publish the X-rated results in due course...

There have been some spectacularly ugly motorcars in the past but in general terms I would suggest that their looks were reflected in their sales figures, or, rather lack of them and some of these such as the Edsel and Lea Francis Leaf Lynx have already been mentioned. Others were products of their times and as tastes have changed time has not been kind to them.
I'm more concerned with some of the more recent and even current offerings as we don't tend to see AMC Pacers every day. Thankfully.
For me the Ssangyong Rodius takes the biscuit. No doubt the designer was inspired by a dormer bungalow.
Then the beautifully built and no doubt very fast triumph of bad taste that is the Porsche Cayenne. This looks like the designer's inspiration came from seeing cars piled on top of one another at a breaker's yard. To be fair VW and Audihave not done much better with their versions on the same platform.
My third vote would go to Chris Bangles BMW 7 series where the boot appeared to be stuck on as an afterthought. A bit like the rear end of a babboon.
One not mentioned previously is the BMW Z3 M Coupe. Another oh dear, what a rear.
And how about the new MINI estate version. Retro gone wrong.

As a schoolboy visiting the 1959 Motor Show I was appalled by the sight of the Lea Francis Leaf Lynx. The grotesque shape was further enhanced by a lilac paint job and gold plated bumpers. The antidote appeared in a street in Paris two years later in the form of a BMW 507.

The Toyota Yaris Verso has to be up there with the worst ever designs at least in terms of aesthetics. Having said that, I still run one! It's got superb carrying capacity, amazing rear leg room and it's seriously comfortable getting in and out if you're no longer in the first flush of youth and are a bit creaky.
Try as I might from any angle however, I look at it and always think "What was the designer on? Had he misplaced his glasses? Was it done on April 1st?"

This may seem rather parochial, but for ugly cars you can't go past the efforts of the Lightburn cement mixer company in Adelaide, South Australia in the 1960s. Look up the details under 'Lightburn Zeta' in Wikipedia.
A truly amazing 'design' department.
Their sports version does look perhaps a little cute, but the sedan is - ugh! Examples are kept at the Birdwood Australian Motor Museum in the Adelaide Hills.
The whole of the Eastern Bloc couldn't excel it in 40 years...

The Citroen DS was, is and always will be at the top of the ugly list. To myself and other motor-trade colleagues, we have always considered it to be the road-going equivalent of a giant cockroach.
Other repulsive looking vehicles: Triumph TR7 (what were they thinking?), Reliant Scimitar (aaaargh! I want to poke my eyes out!!), Datsun 120y (a veritable piece of snot on wheels), Skoda Octavia Estate 1959-64 (drove as bad as it looks), Ssangyong Rodius (plumbing new depths of hideousness), Renault Fuego (horrifique), Hillman Imp (quick pass me a bucket, I think I'm going to be ill...), MMC Smart Car (would look better with the contents of the bucket all over it). Also worth mentioning - any of the following cars circa 1960-64: DAF 600, DKW Junior, NSU 1000, Simca, Saab 95, and VW Variant.

It's easy to pick the most beautiful. Even the most ugly are often perversely beautiful. Take a Citroen Ami 6 saloon, in my opinion 'beautiful' and designed by the same talented man who designed the DS: Bertoni.
For some reason an ugly car often has something to do with economics mean-spiritedness and mediocrity on the part of the manufacturers. Sometimes the design is just a blunder like the Ford Edsel or uninspired like the box shaped mid 70's and 80's cars.
ugly:
Ford Mustang '74
Trabant 600 combi
Datsun 120A coupe '70
Morris Marina '71
Austin Allegro '73
Triumph TR7
Lada 1200 '72
Volga M-24 '70
Skoda 12 LS
Robin Reliant 3/25 '64
Toyota Corona '65
Wolseley Hornet '63
Datsun Cherry '74
Studebaker Champion coupe '50
Stutz Blackhawk '66
Stutz Bearcat convertible '71
Citroen Visa
Renault 8
Renault 12
Chrysler Le Baron K '82
Chevrolet Chevette '84
Ford Edsel '58
Tatra 2-603 '63
Ford Cortina
Ford Granada
I was going to add 'any white van', but I think it's the maniac at the wheel combined with the vehicle that seems to fit the description!

There does seem to be a confusion between bad and ugly. It also seems that often the confusion comes from those who previously had the model in question, notably the Austin Princess. I don't doubt that it was an appalling car to drive, own etc., but to put it in the same league of ugliness as the Rodius is absurd.
One car that seems to have been ignored in the ugliness stakes is the last model Ford Scorpio; so ugly that Ford stopped making cars in that category from then on, presumably becausenobody would take them seriously after that!
So for me:
1 Ssang Yong Rodius
2 Ford Scorpio

AMC Pacer is the UGLIEST CAR IN THE WORLD. Even their commercials reeked.
Picture tap-dancing women in elegant dresses and Guys in White evening clothes, top hat, cane the works.
All singing about the beauty of the pacer, and as they roll it out the dancers are all forced, two at a time, to fall of the catwalk because "It's SO WIDE!" Ands that was what AMC designed the car to be, they imagined that people wanted a WIDE small car, that was difficult to park.
Is it any wonder that AMC is now defunct?

1. Austin Allegro Estate. The Allegro was bad enough, but the estate had the worst lines in history. It was just wrong.

When I saw the Ford Granada waaay above the TR4/5, for example, in the list I thought that your readers must be a bit wierd. But then when I came across the Rover SD1 even further up still I began to get a bit scared. Are these people loose in the community.........

I don't think I could nominate many cars designed after about 1975. I'm all for hiring the handicapped, but blind car designers? That's going a bit far. Before then, cars were sculpted works of art with form and functionality. My nominee won't hit the charts It's the 1960 Pontiac Catalina Safari Wagon. Uglies car ever made? I don't even have to ponder the question. Without any doubt, it's the Pontiac Aztec.

Our wonderful Jaguar E Type will always be up there in front when it comes to beautiful automobiles!
They are simply miles ahead and as an ex Austin, MG, BMC and BMH employee I just lice the cars and the feel and smell when sitting in them and driving them!
Thank you Sir William Lyon - great work!

Worst cars....too numerous to mention, but a special mention must go to the following;
Ssanyong Rodius
Austin Princess (1970's version)
Fiat Multipla
Mini Metro
Austin Allegro
Pontiac Aztec
Scion XB
Hillman Imp
Renault Fuego
The beloved Trabant (Trabi), of course.
But the winner has to be the AMC Pacer. There cannot be an uglier car, can there?

When Bob Lutz announced the Ford Sierra, he was reported to have said that his only real competition was the GM/Opel equivalent, and that the British Leyland Princess was "just a great big ugly flying t*rd."
I don't know if he was reported accurately or not, but if so he was mirroring my own sentiment. The Princess was a ghastly vehicle; unattractive to look at, dire to drive, and miserable to maintain.
It really was a great big ugly flying t*rd of a car, you know.
