Pet subjects: my top 20 cat breeds

Cats are increasingly popular and suit our urban lifestyles.

When these independent creatures choose to spend time with us, they make us feel we've earned their affection, which adds a different tone to our relationship with them.

Pedigree cats have elegant looks and quirky personalities, but are prone to inherited diseases. Consult the Feline Advisory Bureau (www.fabcats.org) to learn more before choosing a kitten.

I have listed my favourite 20 cat breeds here, but I am a true ailurophile: I'd happily share my life with any cat rather than none.

Do you agree with my selection? Are there any cat breeds I have missed out?

Click on the 'Have Your Say' button and tell us what you think.

  • Send your pet problems to pete.wedderburn@telegraph.co.uk. All sick animals should, of course, be taken to a vet.
  • Remember that cats, like all pets, need access to fresh water at all times, especially in warm weather.
