Born at Lowell,_Massachusetts, he was a pupil of the Massachusetts_Normal_Art_School, of the School_of_the_Museum_of_Fine_Arts,_Boston, and of the _Académie_Julian, Paris. After early figure-painting and illustration, he became prominent as a landscape painter. He was one of the Ten_American_Painters who in 1897 seceded from the Society_of_American_Artists. For some years he was an instructor in the Womans_Art_School, Cooper_Union, New_York, and in the Art Students League, New York. In 1893 he became a member of the American_Water_Color_Society, New York.
