[edit] Recent and ongoing conflicts
The following are tables of some of the recent and ongoing conflicts around the world:
- Major wars
Major wars are those that cause at least 1000 battlefield deaths annually,[1] or cause destruction and outstanding severity.
It is hard to estimate what ongoing conflicts fill this criterion, but the conflicts below are generally regarded as major wars.
Start of Conflict | War/Conflict | Location | Death Toll |
---|---|---|---|
1983 | Sri Lankan civil war | Sri Lanka | ~70,000 [2] |
2003 | War in Darfur | Sudan | 200,000 - 400,000 |
2003 | Iraq War | Iraq | 100,000 - 1,124,303
(see: Casualties of the Iraq War) |
2007 | Ogaden conflict | Ogaden, Ethiopia | ~1,500 |
- Other conflicts
There are many other smaller-scale armed conflicts that result in a smaller number of casualties each year.
