He was drafted by the Canadiens in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, 1st round, 13th overall. He has played for the AHL Quebec Citadelles and also with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the minor-league AHL. He also played with the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

After spending 3 seasons in the Canadiens organization was claimed off of waivers on Nov. 29, 2005 by the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he has since developed into a leading two-way defenceman. As an unrestricted free agent after the 2007–2008 season, he is expected to attract attention in the off-season from several teams looking to upgrade their blueline. Teams which are said to be interested in his services include the Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres.
