Quneitra Governorate (Arabic: مُحافظة القنيطرة) is one of the fourteen governorates (provinces) of Syria. It is situated in southern Syria, bordering Lebanon, Jordan and Israel. Its area varies, according to different sources, from 685 km² [1] to 1,710 km² [2]. The governorate has a population of 69,000 (2005 estimate) [1]. The capital is Quneitra. Much of the governorate was captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and 1973 Yom Kippur War (some in Arab countries call it the Ramadan War) and forms the contentious Golan Heights.
