Betsy Boze

Betsy V. Boze (rhymes with rose) is an American academic and university administrator.[1] She currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer, Dean and Professor of Marketing at Kent State University Stark[2] in North Canton (Stark County) Ohio.[3][4][5][6]

Boze was born and grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. She is the daughter of the late Dr. Leroy Vogel, Cultural Attache to post-war Germany and Dean of Centenary College of Louisiana and Betty Garrett Vogel McDonald a travel writer and broadcaster. She is the granddaughter of U.S. Congressman (Alabama) Oscar Lee Gray and stepdaughter of the late Paul Cranford McDonald, President of Murphy Oil Company, Canada.

Boze is a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient (equivalent to Boy Scouts "Eagle Scout")and lifetime member of member of the Girl Scouts of America.[7], the Junior Leagues of Shreveport, Louisiana and Canton, Ohio, Brookside Country Club (Ohio), First United Methodist Church (Shreveport, LA). She is also a member and/or contributor to a number of environmental, fine and performing arts, educational and alumni organizations. She was a 2004 NISOD Award Winner(National Organization for Staff and Organizational Excellence), recognized for excellence in higher education administration.[8]

Boze attended Southfield School and graduated from C. E. Byrd High School where she became active in social and environmental causes, including the first Earth Day[9] She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and a Masters in Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She went on to study international management at Thunderbird - (formerly called The Garvin School of International Management) in Glendale, Arizona, Spanish at ITESM, Monterrey Institute of Technology in Monterrey, Mexico, and Japanese at the International Christian University (ICU) in Mitaka, Japan. Boze earned her Ph.D. in Business Administration majoring in marketing with minors in economics and sociology from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Dr. Boze's post-doctoral studies include The University of Hawaii Pan Asian Institute, HERS Bryn Mawr Higher Education Resource Symposium, Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration, American Association of State Colleges and Universities Millennial Leadership Institute,[10] American Council on Education Fellowship, the Harvard University Seminar for New Presidents and the Center for Creative Leadership, "Leadership at the Peak" program for CEOs.

Dr. Boze is a graduate of Leadership Texas, Leadership America[11] and Leadership Stark County.[12]

[edit] Faculty, Teaching, and Administrative appointments

She has held full time faculty and administrative appointments at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, University of Maryland University College (Japan, Germany and Italy), Centenary College of Louisiana and The University of Alaska Anchorage where she was appointed Business Administration Department Chair and elected President of the Faculty Senate.[13]

Dr. Boze was selected as the inaugural Dean of the School of Business at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and served as Assistant to the President and American Council on Education Fellow at Tulane University.[14].

Dr. Boze served as the Chief Academic Officer of The University of Texas System "UT TeleCampus" MBAO,[15] and held a Research Faculty appointment as Co-Director of the Texas Ports & Waterways at Texas A&M University.[16]

She was a Visiting Faculty for Portland State University in Khabarovsk [Хаба́ровск] in the former Soviet Union and Graduate Assistant for The University of Texas at Dallas and The University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, Arkansas).

Dr. Boze has published over 50 peer-refereed research articles and book chapters on marketing and business administration.[17][18][19][20] She writes and speaks publicly on higher education administration, distance education, technology and women's issues.[21][22][23][24] Boze was one of the master planners and creators of the University of Texas TeleCampus, the University of Texas System web based, virtual university.[15] She is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in American Women and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. Boze is a Commissioner on the City of Canton Sustainability Commission, Higher Learning Commission[25] (North Central Association of Colleges and Universities)[26] Consultant/Evaluator and[27] Peer Reviewer . She received the 2004 National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award and serves as trustee on the boards: American Cancer Society (Ohio) Canton Museum of Art,[28] Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce, Mayor's Literacy Commission (Canton, OH), Ohio Area Health Education Centers, Ohio Citizens for the Arts,[29] Paul and Betty McDonald Foundation, Stark Development Board,[30] and the Stark Education Partnership P-16.[31] Boze served on Rep. William Healy's mayoral Transition Team and Inaugural Committee. She served on the Ohio Board of Regents task force to revise the Operating Manual for Two Year Campus Programs. She is President of the Ohio Association of Regional Campuses, the Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee of the Stark Development Board, the Strategic Planning Committee of the Stark County YMCA, Lake Local Schools and the Greater Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. Boze is a 2008 delegate to the Mid-West Higher Education Consortium.

Dr. Boze serves on the Editorial Boards of the international journal Teaching & Learning in Higher and Continuing Educationand the American Council on Education Network News.[32] National appointments include the Finance Committee of the American Council on Education Council of Fellows, American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Women Presidents and Chancellors affinity group, the AASCU Policies and Practices Committee and is a sponsor, mentor and faculty of the AASCU Millennial Leadership Initiative.[33]

She is on the faculties of the American Council on Education Department Chairs Workshop, 2007 ACE National and Regional Leadership Forusm, 2006 American Association of State Colleges and Universities Millinnial Leadership Institute and 2007 HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration. Boze was also a Team Leader for the 2007 AASCU Hispanic Student Success Report.[34][35] Dr. Boze has successfully completed terms as:

  • President, Southwest Business Deans President, Texas Council of Collegiate Education in Business (Texas College and University Business Deans)
  • President, Junior Achievement (Texas)
  • President, Delta Delta Delta Alumni Chapter (Rio Grande Valley)

Dr. Boze served from 1996-2005 as the State Coordinator of the American Council on Education Women's Network for Texas,[36] and continues to serve on the editorial board of the ACE Network News. From 1997-2005 she chaired the Women Administrators in Management Education (the women's affinity group) of the Association for the Advancement of Colleges and Schools of Business.[37][38][39] Dr. Boze was Co-Director of the Texas Ports and Waterways Commission of the Texas Transportation Institute,[40] on the boards of Success by Six in Brownsville, TX,[41] Girl Scouts of the USA (Texas).

[edit] Environmental work

Boze has been active in the environmental movement[42] since the first Earth Day.[43] when she sewed an Ecology Flag (American) that flew in front of her high school.[44] She marched in the Millennial Earth Day celebration from Times Square to the United Nations Building in New York City. Under her leadership, Kent State Stark has become one of the largest recyclers in Stark County (Ohio). The campus is the site of Stark County's Earth Day and dedicated a protected wetland/pond[45] in 2007.[46][47] [48] Beginning with the 2008 graduating class, she has encouraged students to take the "Graduation Pledge" of social and environmental responsibility.[49][50][51]

Dr. Boze She has studied seven languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, German and Italian), lived in the U.S., Mexico, Switzerland, Japan, East and West Germany and Italy and taught in several other countries.

She is the mother of three children. Her oldest son lives in Anchorage, Alaska and works as a fishing guide. Her daughter Broox Garrett Vogel Boze is in a doctoral program in Zoology at Colorado State University and is currently researching Japanese Macaques (Snow Monkeys) on an NSF grant. Her youngest son, Lee-Gray Boze is President of American Petroleum (a Colorado-based petroleum geology company specializing in karst).

In her personal time she prefers swimming and skiing, adventure and water sports (caving, paddling, sky diving, scuba and most recently kite boarding). In more reflective moments she enjoys reading, flying kites (in almost 100 countries), suduko and backgammon.
