The biblical Day of the Lord, according to Robert_H._Gundry, is a thousand year period - the millennium - which begins immediately following the Great Tribulation at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Gundry identifies this period, on page 89, in his book ''The Church and the Tribulation'', Chapter 6: The Day of the Lord. The term “Day of the Lord” is recorded twenty-four times in Scripture. In the Old Testament there are numerous other terms that are synonyms for the Day of the Lord including: * the day of darkness * the day of God's wrath * the day of calamity * the day of wrath * the day of battle * day of disaster * day of reckoning * the day of his burning anger * day of vengeance * the day of salvation * the day of clouds and darkness * the day of your watchmen * the day of calamity * the day of his coming * that great and dreadful day of the LORD. Zephaniah combines seven of these terms for the Day of the Lord together in one passage. The great day of the LORD is near-- near and coming quickly. Listen! The cry on the day of the LORD will be bitter, the shouting of the warrior there. That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness, a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers. I will bring distress on the people and they will walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like filth. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord's wrath (Zephaniah 1:14-17). In the New Testament there are also synonyms for the Day of the Lord including: * the day of judgment * the day of our Lord Jesus Christ * the day of God's wrath * the day of the Lord Jesus * the day of redemption * the day of Christ Jesus * the day of slaughter * the day of God * the day of Christ * the great day of their wrath * the great day of God Almighty So numerous are the references to the Day of the Lord in Scripture that biblical writers often abbreviated their references to it with “that day” or “the day.” ===References=== *Gundry, Robert H. - The Church and the Great Tribulation: A Biblical Examination of Posttribulationism. 1973 Zondervan {{Uncategorized|October 2006}}
