Northeastern Pennsylvania

Northeastern Pennsylvania is the mountainous area of Pennsylvania that includes the Pocono Mountains, the Endless Mountains and former anthracite coal mining cities, including Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton and Carbondale. U.S. Presidents Harry Truman and George W. Bush both visited this area more than once during their presidencies, particularly Bush who has thus far visited northeastern Pennsylvania a total of six times. Northeastern Pennsylvania is home to the U.S. Defense Department's most expansive electronics maintenance facility, the Tobyhanna Army Depot.

[edit] Geography

The area is located in the northeastern corner of the state and is made up of 14 counties spread across the Coal Region, the Poconos and the Endless Mountains. The counties that make up Northeastern Pennsylvania are Bradford County, Carbon County, Columbia County, Luzerne County, Lackawanna County, Monroe County, Montour County, Northumberland County, Pike County, Schuylkill County, Sullivan County, Susquehanna County, Wayne County and Wyoming County. It encompasses the larger cities of Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton as well as several smaller municipalities such as Carbondale, Pittston, Berwick, Bloomsburg, Honesdale, Jim Thorpe and Tobyhanna

[edit] Attractions and Entertainment

Northeastern Pennsylvania is home to several attractions. PNC Field in Moosic hosts the New York Yankees AAA affiliate. Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre hosts AHL hockey and af2 football. Pocono Raceway in Long Pond holds two NASCAR races annually. Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Plains features harness racing and is Pennsylvania's first casino. Skiers can find several slopes in the area, including Blue Mountain Ski Resort, east of Palmerton, Snö Mountain Ski Resort in Scranton and Camel Beach Water Park & Ski Resort in Tannersville. There are also several attractions that explore the region's industrial history. Eckley Miners' Village near Hazleton and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour in Scranton highlight coal mining history, while Steamtown National Historic Site and the Electric City Trolley Museum, both in Scranton, focus on transportation history.

[edit] Colleges and Universities

Many well known universities are based in the area. Penn State operates campuses in the Wilkes-Barre area, near Scranton and in Hazleton. Colleges in the Scranton area include Marywood University in Dunmore and Scranton, Lackawanna College in Scranton and The University of Scranton, a Jesuit University in downtown Scranton. Wilkes-Barre area colleges include Wilkes University in downtown Wilkes-Barre, King's College also in downtown Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke and College Misericordia in Dallas. Keystone College in La Plume, Baptist Bible College & Seminary in Clarks Summit and East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania in East Stroudsburg are among the other colleges in the area.

The only major airport to serve the area is Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport in Avoca. Several smaller airports operate in the area, including Wilkes-Barre Wyoming Valley Airport in Forty Fort (only for "smaller, private planes"), Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport in Tobyhanna, Hazleton Municipal Airport in Hazleton, Skyhaven Airport in Tunkhannock.
