The Universiade is an International multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is often referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games.

On January 16, 2007 Shenzhen and Erzurum were announced as the host cities of the 2011 Universiades.

For 2011, Shenzhen was the candidate of the People's Republic of China [1]. On June 28, 2006, the official bid book had been sent to the FISU HQ to confirm its bid. Shenzhen Enters 2011 SU Bid

For the 2011 Summer Universiade, the bid cities were the following:

• Shenzhen - China - winner
• Kaohsiung - Taiwan
• Kazan - Russia
• Poznań - Poland
• Murcia - Spain

For the 2011 Winter Universiade, the bid cities were the following:

• Erzurum - Turkey - winner
• Maribor - Slovenia
