The flag of Kyrgyzstan was adopted on March 3, 1992. It consists of a red field with a yellow sun in the center having 40 rays representing the 40 Kyrgyz tribes; alternate interpretations suggest 40 warriors of the mythical hero Manas. On the obverse side the rays run counterclockwise, on the reverse, clockwise. In the center of the sun is a red ring crossed by two sets of three lines, a stylized representation of the crown or tunduk (Kyrgyz түндүк) of the traditional Kyrgyz yurt, a symbol replicated in many facets of Kyrgyz architecture. The red portion of the flag represents the peace and openness of Kyrgyzstan.
