[edit] Description and history

AmericanLife TV's programming consists of reruns of television series dating from the 1950s through the early 1990s and original programs aimed at baby boomers. The network was launched in February 1985 and acquired in 2001 by the Unification Church. With company headquarters located in Washington, D.C., AmericanLife TV claims over 10 million subscribers throughout the U.S.[1] The network is also available on at least one over-the-air terrestrial affiliate: WBQP-CA in Pensacola, Florida, which uses the network for part of its schedule.[2]

According to a June, 2007 story in Variety, the network has been a consistent money-loser, though the Unification Church's tax-exempt status makes it easier for the parent organization to absorb the losses. Vice-president of marketing Darlene Chapman-Holmes blamed AmericanLife TV's status as "a niche, standalone network that doesn't have any leverage" for its failure to land more lucrative carriage deals with cable and satellite system operators.[3] The network has made a video on demand (VOD) deal with TVN Entertainment Corporation to offer up to twenty hours of programming per month on a VOD basis to more than 100 cable affiliates.[4]

AmericanLife TV recently expanded its programming library considerably by acquiring rights to a number of classic television series from Twentieth Television, including Hill Street Blues, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Newhart and Batman.[5] The network also made a deal with CBS Television Distribution for rights to Mission: Impossible.[6] Beginning in June, 2007, AmericanLife TV gradually revamped its primetime schedule to introduce these programs and others.
