Robert S. Wistrich

Robert Solomon Wistrich (born 1945) is the Neuburger Professor of European and Jewish history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the head of the University's Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism.

[edit] Early life

Wistrich was born in Lenger, Kazakhstan in 1945. ^[1] His parents were leftist Polish Jews who had moved to Lviv in 1940 to escape rampant anti-Semitism; however, they found Soviet totalitarianism little better. In 1942 they moved to Kazakhstan, where Wistrich's father was imprisoned twice by the NKVD. ^[2]

Wistrich received his Ph.D. from the University of London, ^[1] and is the author and editor of 23 books, including Socialism and the Jews (1982); The Jews of Vienna in the Age of Franz Joseph (1989), which won the Austrian State Prize for Danubian History; and Antisemitism, the Longest Hatred (1992), which was awarded the H. H. Wingate Prize for non-fiction in the UK.

He was one of six scholars who sat on an international Catholic-Jewish historical commission from 1999 to 2001 to examine the wartime record of Pope Pius XII. ^[3]
