[edit] Name

In the former Yugoslavia, the city and the municipality was known as Bosanski Novi. During the Bosnian War the town became part of the Republika Srpska and the Bosnian Muslims population (which today largely considers itself Bosniak) and Croat population who refused to leave, and ended up being murdered by Serbs. The city epithet Bosanski (meaning "Bosnian") was removed from the name of the city.

It was alleged that in 1992, during the “ethnic cleansing” of Bosnian War, in exchange for a place in a refugee convoy, 4,000 expelled inhabitants of then-Bosanski Novi waited for days in line to sign documents renouncing their property and pledging never to return there.[1]

The current legal name of the town is Novi Grad, but in some of the joint institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina there is a persistent dual use of the two names - the Election Law, for example, refers to "Bosanski Novi / Novi Grad".[2][3]
