The Great Depression affected American life greatly. People were writing to the president of the United States at the time (Franklin Roosevelt) and pleaded for his help to end their starvation and help to pay their bills. Boys as young as 12 wrote to the president with emotional letters stating that they couldn't pay any of their bills for months. (Doc 1). Many of these families were broken and went through many hardships due to parents not being able to provide for their children. The schools also experienced drops in attendance because families needed their children to work.
