Gu of Seoul

The Gu of Seoul, South Korea. There are twenty-five Gu ("Districts"; 구; 區) in Seoul. The gu vary greatly in area (from 10 to 47 km²) and population (from less than 140,000 to 630,000). Songpa has the most people, while Seocho, the largest area. "Gu"s are similar to London's or New York's boroughs, and a "gu"'s government handles many of the functions that are handled by city governments in other jurisdictions. This city-like standing is underscored by the fact that each gu has its own sister cities. Each gu is divided into "dong" or neighbourhoods. Some gu have only a few dong while others like Jongno-gu have a very large number of distinct neighborhoods.

Jongno-gu composes the space that was once enclosed by the city walls and the existing structures of Namdaemun and Dongdaemun acted as entrances. This is why dongdaemun is found here and not in Dongdaemun-gu. Because it is very old and was long considered to be most important, Jongno-gu has a very large number of dong and holds much of Seoul's historical buildings and cultural treasures. | ||
