Santa Mesa, Manila is a district in the city of Manila. Santa Mesa's name comes from the "Santa Mesa de la Misericordia" -an "obra pía" or pious work which provided social services during Spanish colonial times- which was the owner of the land in which Santa Mesa now stands. The original poblacion (town center) is in Old Santa Mesa Road, from Stop and Shop to V. Mapa. However, the town was enlarged and came to include was is now the streets of Ramon Magsaysay, Anonas, Santol, Pureza, Bataan, M.H. Dela Fuente, Bacood, and V. Mapa. The town was merged with Sampaloc, and the two merged with Manila, as districts.
