Born Aline Murray on 1 August 1888 in Norfolk,_Virginia, she was the daughter of Ada_Foster_Murray, a poet, and Kenton C. Murray, (-1895) editor of the ''Norfolk Landmark'' (newspaper). Ada Foster Murray, remarried on 22 February 1900, in Metuchen, New Jersey to Henry_Mills_Alden, managing editor of ''Harper's_Magazine'', and Alden became Aline's step-father.[Metuchen Recorder, 24 February 1900, accessed 19 August 2006.]
She was educated at the Rutgers College Grammar School (now Rutgers Preparatory School) in New_Brunswick,_New_Jersey and the Vail-Deane_School in Elizabeth,_New_Jersey the latter institution from which she graduated in 1908.[Biographical Notes from Rittenhouse, Jessie B.
