There are numerous ways to make a Planned Gift to Shawnigan. The most common is through a Bequest. A gift of securities, utilizing the tax advantages recently created, is also a flexible and useful method of making a Planned Gift.

Less common, but still an interesting and worthwhile alternative format, is a Charitable Remainder Trust in which you, as donor, can retain income or the use of your belongings although you have given them as a gift to the School—houses, cottages, securities, shares in a business, revenue property, art work, antiques: all can be used for gifts in this fashion. Insurance can also be used to provide a Planned Gift which is inexpensive and ultimately of great value to the School. A Planned Gift is most commonly used for gifts to the Endowment.

A gift of any amount may be directed to a purpose chosen by the donor. Gifts of $100,000 and greater may be named on behalf of the donor whether it is for a Capital Project or an Endowment purpose. With respect to Endowment gifts, $250,000 and $500,000 will provide for half and full fee scholarship or bursary grants, respectively; a gift of $1,000,000 will endow a faculty chair.

The staff of the Advancement Office would like to help you on a confidential basis with suggestions and information about the most suitable means of creating a Planned Gift and of realizing the related tax benefits. In many cases Planned Gifts are part of a tax or estate planning programme. Please for more information from the Director of Planned Giving.

As a means of acknowledging Planned Gifts, the Shawnigan Legacy Society has been established. Particular recognition is made of the nature of the gift as each new member is inducted—partly in thanks for the gift, and also to increase awareness among the Shawnigan 'family' of the form these gifts can take. Planned Gifts need not be recognized in this fashion, or may be acknowledged anonymously, if that is the donor's wish.
