Signs of the Times

March 2008

Miscarriage and Me

My husband and I return home, and now I’m angry. Why should this happen to me? I ask myself. I need an outlet for my anger. I start beating the doona. I throw a family photo on the floor, smashing the glass in the frame. My husband quietly cleans it up. He doesn’t know what to do. I’m angry and alone.

Making Sense of Destruction

In general, we humans don’t like destruction. We call it senseless, yet it happens. So we seek reasons, causes. It frightens us to realise we can invest our time, money, hopes and efforts into things that can, without apparent reason, suddenly be taken from us.

What I Learn From My Students

Being a teacher has its downsides: long days, sick students, disgruntled parents, assessments and marking, and the continual need to be upbeat and enthusiastic. Yet the upsides are abundant too

The Real Heaven

What then does the Bible say about heaven? If you looked at it on a percentage basis you would have to concludenot much. But there are a few texts that do give us some insights.

Going Deeper

As a teenager in Papua New Guinea, I was introduced to snorkelling and spearfishing on the reefs just a boat ride away from Lae. I had no real fear of the water or what was in it, and had never seen anything poisonous or vicious—after all, I was only 16 and what could hurt me?

Sweet Dreams: 10 ways to sleep better

Getting enough sleep is vital for your wellbeing, allowing time for physical and spiritual rejuvenation, and helping maximise your health. The third of your life spent sleeping has a significant effect on the other two-thirds of your life. Sleep is a necessity—not a luxury.

Intriguing Oxford

The city is noted primarily for its university—often considered the best in the world and certainly the oldest in the English-speaking world.

Who Wrote the Bible?

So where did it come from? How did this book that for centuries has guided individuals, comforted families, influenced nations and shaped whole civilisations come into existence?

Life Savings

If you had no income, how would you save money? And how would you begin to earn an income if your day was taken up with caring for your family and small home?

A Cheerful Heart

Unfortunately, a lot of us don’t laugh as much as we should. Studies have shown that children laugh on average 400–600 times each day, while adults only laugh four to six times a day. We need to retrain ourselves to laugh— especially when we don’t feel like it!

God is Great!

We arrived at 9 pm and it was very dark. The border guard told us the bus did not have the proper paperwork and the bus was not allowed into Zimbabwe. The bus driver needed to get going back so he unloaded our luggage and left.
