50 Cent Files Defamation Suit Against Ex Following House Blaze

6/19/08, 2:38 pm EST

You’d think that after a mysterious fire burned the $4.2 million house occupied by an ex-girlfriend he was feuding with and his son, 50 Cent would try to keep his name out of papers, or at least take measures to ease suspicions. But Fiddy has always been unconventional, as evidenced by a defamation suit the rapper filed against his baby mama. The lawsuit comes after Shaniqua Tompkins, 50’s ex, made comments saying “He tried to kill me and his own child” following the blaze. 50’s lawyer claims Tompkins is “spreading falsehoods” along with not allowing the rapper to see or communicate with his son Marquise, thus violating a custody agreement. Lawyers for both sides are due in court tomorrow, but 50 won’t be in attendance, as the rapper is in New Orleans filming Microwave Park with Val Kilmer and Sharon Stone.

Ted Nugent Targets Detroit for 6,000th Concert

6/19/08, 1:40 pm EST

Guitarist, radical Republican and firearm fan Ted Nugent will celebrate his 6,000th concert with a July 4th performance in his hometown of Detroit. That’s a lot of “Stranglehold.” The bash is the centerpiece of the self-coined “Summer of Ted,” a season that will also feature everyone’s favorite NRA board member pimping an already-released DVD and book as well as making his feature film debut. Discussing why he chose to perform in Detroit as opposed to a place with better hunting or more fervent conservative beliefs, the Nuge said, “Michiganiacs demand maximum excellence — they are the ultimate demanding and discerning audience in the world. This show is going to be a mountain top that most musicians can only fantasize about.” As for that movie role, Nugent will appear in the much anticipated Beer For My Horses, co-starring fellow musicians Toby Keith and Willie Nelson.

Fricke’s Picks: Mudhoney

6/19/08, 12:28 pm EST

Incorrigible and indestructible, Seattle’s real supersonics, Mudhoney, celebrate 20 years of naked garage rock with a shotgun blast. Their 1988 six-song EP, Superfuzz Bigmuff (Sub Pop), named after a pair of popular distortion pedals, is now two out-of-control CDs with extra singles (such as the seminal grunge grenade “Touch Me I’m Sick”), demos and live cuts. There is also a new studio assault, The Lucky Ones (Sub Pop), which opens with singer Mark Arm howling “I’m Now” and, in that song’s chorus, rewriting the Rolling Stones’ version of Robert Johnson’s “Love in Vain” like the ‘69 Iggy Pop (”The black light was my baby/And the strobe light was my mind”). The band cut the album in three and a half days. It shows — in the right ways.

Kid Rock Encourages Stealing From Everybody in PSA

6/19/08, 11:20 am EST

Kid Rock has stepped up yesterday’s endorsement of stealing music with the above PSA. Yesterday, Rock told the BBC that not only should people steal songs but also “steal everything,” including gas. In today’s video, he cheekily says stealing from people is okay as long as they’re “fucking rich” — people like Steve Jobs, Tommy Hilfiger, the Toyota corporation and himself. Click above for the complete clip, including an awesome stinger where he lights a cigar and tells the kids to stay in school and keep off the drugs.

Girl Talk Unleashes Pay What You Want Album “Feed the Animals”

6/19/08, 10:40 am EST

Mash-up guru Girl Talk’snew album Feed the Animals is now up for download on the Illegal Art Website. Like Radiohead’s In Rainbows, Feed the Animals will be available for whatever sum listeners deem worthy, even if they want to pay nothing. Girl Talk does have some incentives if you do choose to pay, however: $5 gets you FLAC files and a seamless mix of the album, while $10 gets you that and a physical copy of Feed when they become available. If you choose to download the album, you’re met with a series of options of why you opted not to pay, making you confront your own guilt. The album itself seems more focused and less jittery than Girl Talk’s previous album Night Ripper. Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, Avril Lavigne, Rod Stewart, Blackstreet, Procol Harum, Ace of Base, Kanye West, the Band and that song from Dawson’s Creek all get dropped in, and that’s just the first three tracks.

News Ticker: Poison, Santogold, Young Jeezy and Steven Tyler

6/19/08, 10:10 am EST

  • Poison are suing Capitol Records, claiming the major label has underpaid the band royalties for years. The reunited hair band is seeking $25,000 in damages.
  • Santogold has been sued by a bizarre singer/actor/infomercial star named Santo Gold for name infringement, claiming he’s been the rightful owner of the name since 1983.
  • Rapper Young Jeezy was arrested in Atlanta early yesterday morning on a litany of driving-related charges, including DUI. Jeezy was pulled over when police saw him speeding in a Corvette that had no license plates.
  • As evidenced by his appearance courtside during the Celtics Game 6 win over the Lakers, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler is out of rehab.

Inside T.I.’s Upcoming “Paper Trail”

6/19/08, 9:45 am EST

If,T.I. sounds more reflective than usual on his new album, Paper Trail, there’s a good reason. The Atlanta MC wrote and recorded tracks for the disc at home while on house arrest in the past year, awaiting trial for possession of three machine guns — charges that could have resulted in a decades-long prison sentence. “It felt like the world was against me,” he says of the time he spent working on his sixth full-length, the follow-up to his 2007 CD, T.I. vs. T.I.P. “It felt like people would rather ridicule, judge and condemn me than support me.”

Few of the new songs describe the violent, drug-dealing lifestyle documented on hits like “What You Know” and “Rubberband Man.” Instead, the new record highlights the fear, anger and guilt T.I. was feeling as he awaited trial. “I didn’t know how everything would come out, but I had faith that God had a plan and it would supersede my distorted judgment,” says the rapper, who claims he acquired the arsenal because he feared for his life after his assistant was murdered in 2006. Coldplay’s “Viva” Posts Big First Day Sales

6/19/08, 9:05 am EST

Could Chris Martin be joining Lil Wayne in saving the music industry? One week after Weezy’s Tha Carter III sold 423,000 in its first day of sales on its way to a platinum debut, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida posted similarly big numbers Tuesday, selling 316,000 copies. Viva is expected to usurp TC3 as the SoundScan king next week on its way to expected sales in the 700-750,000 range. If Coldplay can hit that number, it will be the first time since 2005 that albums with sales over 700,000 topped the charts in consecutive weeks. 50 Cent’s The Massacre single-handedly last conquered that feat. Coldplay’s last album, X&Y, sold 737,000 in its debut week in 2005. Coldplay’s big Tuesday is the third-best since SoundScan launched their Building Chart last year, with only Kanye West and Lil Wayne faring better. Viva La Vida also broke the record for most iTunes downloads in a single day, previously held by Jack Johnson. To read Chris Martin’s journey in creating Viva La Vida, check out an excerpt from his Rolling Stone cover story below.
