'''William Walcher''' (d. 14_May 1080) was the Bishop_of_Durham from 1071, a Norman, the first to hold that see, and an appointment of William_the_Conqueror. He was the first prince-bishop (or earl-bishop) from his elevation to the earldom of Northumbria after Waltheof's rebellion, deposition, and executed in 1075. Waltheof had been a close friend: he built a castle at Durham for his bishop. Walcher was a saintly man but an incompetent leader. He was removed from his posts in 1080 and murdered in Gateshead on 14_May 1080{{ref|death}}. His successor in Northumbria was Aubrey_de_Coucy and William of Saint Carilef was the next prince-bishop, though not earl. ==Notes== #{{note|death}} {{cite book | title=The_Complete_Peerage | publisher=The St. Catherine Press. 1936 | location=London | pages=9:705}} {{s-start}} {{s-ecc}} {{s-bef|before=Ethelwin}} {{s-ttl|title=Bishop_of_Durham|years=10711080}} {{s-aft|after=William of Saint Carilef}} {{s-reg}} {{s-bef|before=Waltheof}} {{s-ttl|title=Earl_of_Northumbria|years=10751080}} {{s-aft|after=Aubrey_de_Coucy}} {{end}} {{bishop-stub}} Category:Normans Category:1080_deaths
