'''William Walcher''' (d. 14_May 1080) was the Bishop_of_Durham from 1071, a Norman, the first to hold that see, and an appointment of William_the_Conqueror. He was the first prince-bishop (or earl-bishop) from his elevation to the earldom of Northumbria after Waltheof's rebellion, deposition, and executed in 1075. Waltheof had been a close friend: he built a castle at Durham for his bishop.
Walcher was a saintly man but an incompetent leader. He was removed from his posts in 1080 and murdered in Gateshead on 14_May 1080{{ref|death}}. His successor in Northumbria was Aubrey_de_Coucy and William of Saint Carilef was the next prince-bishop, though not earl.
