List of North American Numbering Plan area codes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Redirected from List of NANP area codes)
Jump to: navigation, search

This is a list of North American telephone area codes in effect for the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). The area that an area code is officially assigned to is known as a Numbering Plan Area (NPA). An area code cannot start with a 0 or 1 because each digit represents either feature codes, operator assistance or the North American long distance prefix. Prior to 1995 all area codes had either 0 or 1 as the middle digit; all new codes from 1995 to present use 2 through 8.

The N9X area codes are reserved for the event that the area codes might need to be expanded to 4 digits (by inserting a 9 in the second digit's place, creating "N9XY", thus making any "N9X" area code impossible), although there is no definite plan for implementing this, only one industry forum recommendation.

Numbers of the form N11 (numbers ending in "11", 2-1-1 through 9-1-1) are not valid as area codes. Some of these codes were historically dialed with a "1" prefix for toll alerting purposes (e.g., 1-4-1-1 for directory assistance), still dialable in some locations.

As N11 codes are allocated locally, not nationally, usage of some of these codes varies between localities or is carrier-specific. These often are not recognized for users of unbundled Voice over IP services, as the gateways may be far from the actual end-user's location. As such, users of such VoIP services who are within the U.S. and Canada require registration of their current physical location with the VoIP provider; users outside of this area must use a landline phone to call the appropriate emergency service in that country.

North American area codes do not begin with either 0 or 1; the same is true of telephone exchanges. North American telephone numbers are always in the NXX-NXX-XXXX format, where N is any digit 2 through 9, and X is any digit 0 through 9. In addition to the eight combinations involving N11, other three-digit numbers have restrictions, or are not usable, such as 555, and 950.
