The featured content star

Featured content represents the best that Wikipedia has to offer. These are the articles, pictures, and other contributions that showcase the polished result of the collaborative efforts that drive Wikipedia. All featured content undergoes a thorough review process to ensure that it meets the highest standards and can serve as an example of our end goals. A small bronze star (The featured content star) in the top right corner of a page indicates that the content is featured. This page gives links to all of Wikipedia's featured content and showcases one randomly selected example of each type of content. You can view another random content selection.

Hilary Putnam
Hilary Putnam is an American philosopher and a central figure in Western philosophy since the 1960s, especially in philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and philosophy of science. He is known for his willingness to apply an equal degree of scrutiny to his own philosophical positions and those of others, subjecting each position to rigorous analysis until he exposes its flaws. As a result, he has acquired a reputation for frequently changing his own position. In philosophy of mind, Putnam is known for his hypothesis of multiple realizability, and for the concept of functionalism, an influential theory regarding the mind-body problem. In philosophy of language, along with Saul Kripke and others, he developed the causal theory of reference, and formulated an original theory of meaning, inventing the notion of semantic externalism based on a famous thought experiment called Twin Earth. In philosophy of mathematics, he and his mentor W.V.O. Quine developed the "Quine-Putnam indispensability thesis," an argument for the reality of mathematical entities, later espousing the view that mathematics is not purely logical, but "quasi-empirical." In the field of epistemology, he is known for the "brain in a vat" thought experiment, which challenges epistemological skepticism. (more...)

Green tent spider

A green tent spider, approximately 15 mm in length, of the genus Cyrtophora on a blade of grass. These spiders create tent-like, highly complex non-sticky webs, sometimes considered a precursor of the simplified orb-web. These webs are aligned horizontally, with a network of supporting threads above them. These spiders often live in colonies.

Featured list: List of Canadian provinces and territories by population

This is a list of Canadian provinces and territories by population, based on Statistics Canada estimates as of January 1, 2008.

Canada has ten provinces and three territories. The three territories of Nunavut, Yukon, and Northwest Territories account for over a third of Canada's area but have very few people, which can make the population density column somewhat misleading. The territories have a smaller combined population than the smallest province, Prince Edward Island. Canada's population is concentrated in the areas close to the U.S. border. As a result, most Canadians live in areas with densities higher than the national average of 3.64 persons per square kilometer.Percentage of total national population is given to the nearest tenth of a percent. Land area statistics exclude freshwater area and are current as of April 1, 2007. Population density is given to two decimal places in persons per square kilometre (except for the territories, whose population density is given to three decimal places).
