Internships with The Walrus

The Walrus Editorial Internship is designed to introduce aspiring writers and editors to the magazine industry and to train them to work to the standards of one of North America's finest general-interest publications.

Editorial interns are involved in all stages of the production process and receive instruction in principles of editing and copy editing as well as training on publishing software. Their primary responsibilities are fact-checking stories, writing the factoids in the magazine's Field Notes section, proofreading copy, and assessing unsolicited pitches. Interns also take part in production and story meetings, shadow-edit articles alongside editors, and assist with Walrus Foundation events.

Internship terms are four months, unpaid. Each session has the interns working thirty hours per week, with some flexibility in scheduling in order to allow for part-time work. There may be intermittent opportunities for interns to provide paid content for the magazine as well.

For Fall 2008, the four-month term will start in mid-September. The application deadline for these sessions is June 30, 2008.

To apply, please submit a statement of purpose, a resume, and two letters of reference. Qualified applicants will be given a set of tasks related to internship duties to complete on deadline, after which a selected group will be interviewed.

Editorial internship applications should be sent to internship@walrusmagazine.com or to:

The Walrus Art Internship gives aspiring designers, photographers, and artists the opportunity to work alongside members of the magazine's award-winning art department. Interns will learn skills including layout, typesetting, graphic design, and assigning, and will apply them to the highest standards of the magazine industry.

There are two six-month art internship sessions per year, with one intern chosen for each. Application deadlines are:

July 15
January 15
for a September start date
for a March start date

To apply, please submit a cover letter, a resume, and a portfolio. Portfolios should reflect the artistic interests, pursuits, and talents of the applicant, but they need not be professional-quality.

Applicants must have studied or worked in their area of specialization at a post-secondary academic institution and must also be no more than thirty years old. Those who do not meet these criteria may make a case for consideration on the basis of exceptional circumstances.
