Thomas Goldstein is a historian of science. He wrote the book Dawn of Modern Science: From the Ancient Greeks to the Renaissance.

According to Goldstein, twelfth-century scholars at the renowned cathedral school at Chartres made particularly good use of biblical teaching in Wisdom 11:21, which notes that God has made all things in measure, number and weight. These 12th century scholars attempted to understand the universe at least partly in mathematical terms.
