[edit] Early years

Omar immigrated to Canada at a young age and put himself through school by working in donut shops, gas stations and convenience stores. Omar graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in engineering and in 2000 received his Master of Business Administration from York University.

[edit] Prior to Entering Politics

After graduation Omar began his career at General Electric. Though Omar’s new position took up much of his time he still was able to give back to the community through his work with youth groups, new immigrants, and the Toronto Star Community Editorial Board.

[edit] 39th Parliament

In 2006 Omar was elected to the House of Commons as the Member for Mississauga—Erindale. Omar quickly became a prominent member of the Liberal Caucus and an active organizer for Gerard Kennedy’s leadership bid. Omar was recognized for his hard work and appointed Critic for Citizenship and Immigration in the shadow cabinet and later as Natural Resources Critic he played a key role in holding the government to account during the isotopes crisis in 2008.

Omar also was committed to representing his riding of Mississauga-Erindale and its residents in the House of Commons. In September 2007 Omar and his fellow Mississauga MP’s were instrumental in pressuring the federal government to commit to funding of the Mississauga Transit BRT.

[edit] Commitment to the Community

Omar finished second in the 2008 general election in one of the closest races in the country. Despite leaving Parliament Omar has continued to advocate on behalf of the residents of Mississauga-Erindale. Omar has also remained active in the Liberal Party and in June 2009 was nominated to represent the Liberal Party in the 41st general election.
