Elbow Win 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize

Drumroll please! The folks behind the esteemed Nationwide Mercury Prize-- a staple of UK music accolade-giving since 1992-- have announced this year's winning album...The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow!

Yes, Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid has trumped over quite an array of formidable challengers, including Radiohead's In Rainbows, Burial's Untrue, Neon Neon's Stainless Style, and the Last Shadow Puppets' The Age of the Understatement, as well as offerings from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, British Sea Power, Estelle, Adele, and Laura Marling. This marks the fourth time Radiohead have come up short after being nominated.

Elbow join last year's victors Klaxons and the rest of the spotty pantheon of past Mercury Prize recipients. Frontman Guy Garvey called the honor "quite literally the best thing that's ever happened to us" in his acceptance speech moments ago, and dedicated the award to late friend and singer/songwriter Bryan Glancy. Congratulations, Elbow!
