He was a well-known figure who walked everywhere he went. He was known around town as "Toe" because his toe had been cut off in an accident. Residents say Byrd was frequently seen walking around the eastern end of the town. He was headed down Martin Luther King Boulevard on his way home from a party early on June 7, 1998, when he accepted a ride with three white men in a pickup.
