The Pink Spiders continue to 'Sweat it Out' after Warped
Under summer's intense heat, the Warped Tour proved to be an easy diet for The Pink Spiders frontman/guitarist Matt Friction.
"I went down a couple belt loops," Friction said with a laugh from his Nashville-area home. "It was tough, but it's fun. It's good for your band. It's good to get us back out there. We had been off for such a long time. Warped Tour is Warped Tour and it definitely kicks your ass, but it definitely was good for us."
The Pink Spiders were debuting material from their forthcoming album, "Sweat It Out," due Sept. 23. The band will give fans another taste of the album, which features the relentlessly hook-laden single "Gimme Chemicals," on tour this fall. The itinerary is below.
Songs like "Gimme Chemicals" and "Truth or Dare" are reminiscent of classic pop songs, a reflection of Friction's influences.
"There's definitely kind of a classic feel to it," Friction said. "We're influences by bands of a lot of different generations--primarily the '50s, '60s and '70s rock 'n' roll bands, the way rock 'n' roll developed.
"I grew up with my parents' LP collection. They listened to The Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Holly. That's where my musical upbringing was."
For "Sweat It Out," Friction recruited uber-producer Brendan O'Brien (Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam), who also played keyboards on the album. (The live line-up includes Friction, bassist Ben Young, drummer Joey B-Side and keyboardist/percussionist Raf Cevallos.)
"Brendan's amazing," Friction said. "He's the most talented person I've ever met. We hit it off really quick. It's one of those environments where the whole time you're recording you don't want it to end. You want to keep making more music. It's kind of funny. We kept doing more songs even when we were finished because we were having so much fun."
Although "Sweat It Out" was recorded while The Pink Spiders were under contract with Geffen, the album will be released on the indie label Adrenaline; Geffen and the group severed ties after "Sweat It Out" was finished.
"It's great to be an indie band again," Friction explained. "It's kind of where we came from. Our first EP was self-released then we were on a small indie in Pennsylvania. This band spent more time on an indie label than on a major label. It's nice to have the creative freedom and opportunity to do what we want to do rather than be told what to do. The record's actually coming out on Adrenaline/Mean Buzz Records, which is my label. All of a sudden we have a lot more control in what's going on."
