Sparklehorse, Polyphonic Spree, RJD2 Do Nightmare
What's this? What's this? A modern rock tribute to the music of A Nightmare Before Christmas? Nah, we're not talking about Pete Wentz and T.I. again, though this thing might even be spookier. On September 30, Walt Disney Records will bring out Nightmare Revisited, a 20-track set of covers of tunes from the surprisingly durable holiday-melding 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas. It features takes on spooky ditties by some of your favorite musicians and, I'd wager, several of your least favorite.
There are covers by Sparklehorse, the Polyphonic Spree, DeVotchKa, Datarock, RJD2, Amiina, the Album Leaf, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and a pair of tunes from original soundtrack composer Danny Elfman. Alas, the project also features participation from KoRn, Plain White Ts, and-- in the roles they were clearly born to play-- Amy Lee of Evanescence, and Marilyn Manson.
It seems as if this disc is intended less for the kiddies who insist on wearing down their Nightmare DVDs every fall, and more for the purple-lipsticked teenyboppers at the food court with the Jack and Sally t-shirts, who, truly, have found their Rebel Without a Cause in this weird little film about the skeleton man.
Also, way to put out a Marilyn Manson record, Disney corporation!
