Palin supporter voting against self (  12)
September 18, 2008
In a recent letter to the editor, a former "Hillary backer" stated her support for the McCain/Palin ticket. She did so in response to what she perceived in the press as a sexist attitude toward Clinton and an overly enthusiastic attitude toward Obama during the primary season.

Light sentence, no justice (  4)
September 18, 2008
As a mother of a beloved son that was killed in Rutland in July 2004 by a distracted driver, I now am sorry that jail time was not part of the sentence for that driver.

Drilling for oil and repercussions (  6)
September 18, 2008
Many Republicans were heard at recent rallies chanting drill, baby, drill! They forgot to include the next line: Spill, baby, spill.

McCain record not reassuring (  4)
September 18, 2008
Libby Sternberg, who used to be Rutland's premier advocate of enabling the wealthy to use taxpayer money to send their children to private schools, expresses concern about liberals casting aspersions on John McCain's service ("Why demean McCain's service," Sept. 13).

Dedication of Sens. Mullin, Sears ( 0)
September 18, 2008
I am glad that I attended the hearing on child sexual predator laws led by state Sen. Kevin Mullin on Monday evening at the hospital here in Rutland. There were several people on the panel. Sen. Mullin and Sen.

What Palin really stands for (  12)
September 18, 2008
In response to Virginia Duffy's homage to Sarah Palin:

Great cooperation in Scouting project (  1)
September 18, 2008
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who assisted me with my Eagle Scout project — the construction of a new volleyball court — at the West Rutland Recreation Center on Aug. 9. The combination of many willing hands, donation of materials, and cooperative weather made a great and memorable day.

Help was there after robbery ( 0)
September 18, 2008
I am writing this letter to inform people that there are miracles. My parents were victims of a burglary this past week. The thief was very clever in stealing her medication and 11 of her rings (or so he thought). The house was just as neat as when she left it. I took it upon myself to call a few "pawn" shops in the area.

Lawsuit seeks judgment only ( 0)
September 18, 2008
I'd like to clear up some misperceptions that may have followed from Cristina Kumka's story on the legal action initiated by my organization against the Vermont School Boards Association. The legal action will not cost taxpayers money. It seeks no money, only a declaratory judgment.

Unfairly tainting Mount St. Joseph (  3)
September 18, 2008
I am appalled that you feel the need to sensationalize your paper at the expense of the local Catholic high school. I do not understand why it is necessary to headline an article about "someone" who is a child molester with the MSJ name in the headlines.

Overlooking cancer risk (  1)
September 18, 2008
After yet another frenzied diatribe by John McClaughry, I felt compelled to point out one glaring error.

Righteous side of eternal struggle (  1)
September 18, 2008
On Sept. 6 in the Rutland Herald, there was published a letter where the author expressed apparent dismay over Gov. Sarah Palin going on the record as saying that the war in Iraq was "God's task." As someone who has been to Iraq as an Army emergency room physician, I can testify that the vast majority of soldiers I deployed with would embrace Gov.

Palin's disturbing lack of honesty (  1)
September 18, 2008
While much of the news and cultural media is swooning over the perky Sarah Palin, many citizens are following her meteoric rise with many concerns. Over the past decade, we have witnessed the rise of the right-wing media, whose regard for the truth seems to pale compared to the promotion of ideology.

Let's get beyond personalities (  2)
September 17, 2008
Virginia Duffy expressed her pleasure in the many fine qualities exempliflied by Mrs Palin over the past week. I want to add my admiration for the other women we had heard about over the past few months.

Seeking seat in Vermont House (  1)
September 17, 2008
My name is Peter Fagan, and it is my privilege to announce my candidacy for the Vermont House representing District 5-1. Born and raised in Rutland, I have resided in Rutland City for 22 years with my wife, Diane, and our three children.

Department needs thorough look ( 0)
September 17, 2008
Gov. Jim Douglas, being on track to reduce the size of government, is right.

McCain promises more of same (  5)
September 17, 2008
In his acceptance speech Sept. 4 at the Republican convention, John McCain first praised President Bush on his behavior of 9/1-1/01. He then took a giant leap across time omitting the seven years that followed. The reason for this omission was obvious.

Palin is GOP gimmick (  14)
September 17, 2008
There was a recent letter by a woman stating how proud she would be to tell her daughter about Sarah Palin. I hope that she will tell the whole story: That Gov.

Palin will be president in 2012 (  4)
September 17, 2008
It is my opinion that in a little over four years from now Sarah Palin will be the president of the United States, that Danzinger will be standing in front of the gates of hell, and that Maureen Dowd will be sniveling behind his left shoulder.

Palin nomination was insulting (  5)
September 17, 2008
As a woman who has not missed voting in over 50 years, I want to express my indignation about Sen. McCain's nomination of Sarah Palin for the position of vice president of our country. She came upon the scene from Alaska where she was governor and mayor of a small town of 6,000. She has no or little knowledge about many of the issues she will face.

A better way to vet candidates (  1)
September 17, 2008
It seems that during this season of constant bombardment with snapshot ads and an American Idol mentality it is really imperative that we find a way to get the necessary information out to the voters so that they can make an informed choice and not one based on image and celebrity popularity.

McCain's record of flip-flops (  5)
September 16, 2008
I went out on the lake the other day and caught a big old fish, probably the baddest bass in the lake. As I watched it flip-flopping in the bottom of my boat, I was reminded of someone.

Exploiting record for politics (  7)
September 16, 2008
Remember back when John McCain wouldn't use his time as a POW for political purposes? He thought it would be sleazy to do that. Most of us agreed. We honored him for his service, and we admired him for his restraint.

Palin looks a lot like Cheney (  6)
September 16, 2008
It's always the extreme ones that are the biggest hypocrites. Gov. Palin is an extreme conservative, of course, and the conservative call is "get the government off your back." It was, however, not surprising that Gov. Palin used the power of her office to get on the back of her sister's husband.

They won't sign petition (  6)
September 16, 2008
While downtown at Friday Night Live with a group of people collecting signatures to petition the Vermont legislators to pass stricter child sex-predator laws, I saw state Sen. Carris pass by us several times without looking our way. Finally, I approached him and his wife to ask if they would sign the petition.

Paper is sexist, ignorant (  12)
September 16, 2008
I read with interest your editorial of Sept. 4. How your paper can support Obama with two years in the Senate and no executive experience and write an editorial against Gov. Palin with executive experience is beyond my comprehension. The Bill of Rights quoted in your masthead was adopted in 1777. In 1920, women were given the right to vote.

Vital program is closing ( 0)
September 16, 2008
I am someone who has lived in and around the Rutland community for over 50 years before temporarily moving to Connecticut.

Some changes worth considering ( 0)
September 15, 2008
During the present, unbelievable long, presidential campaign, many references have been made to change. The word change, however, tends to be generic and usually needs qualification to be meaningful.

Cable provider choice needed (  3)
September 15, 2008
This past weekend I experienced poor television reception. Anyone familiar with that? Thus began this scenario — called Comcast to report problem. I was told there was no problem and that it must have been something I did to cause the perceived problem — where upon they turned off my box until a person could get to check it out. Off went the TV.

Fannie, Freddie lacked oversight (  1)
September 15, 2008
The recent bail out of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac highlight two core philosophical weaknesses in the Bush administration: the blind faith in the power and goodness of the unfettered free market and the belief that uncritical loyalty absolves all sins.
