[edit] Analysis

The CSU had its worst result in 50 years, losing the majority in the Landtag for the first time in 46 years.[1][2] The CSU, if it wishes to remain in government, will have to find coalition partners in the next Landtag.

The SPD had its worst results ever in this election, polling just over 18% and losing 2 seats.

This election also marks the return of the FDP to the Landtag after a 14-year absence, and it also marks the first time that the Free Voters grassroots movement entered the Landtag. It entered the Landtag with 21 voters, becoming the third largest party, in terms of its member caucus, in the new Landtag.
