- October - The ISRO's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft will be launched to the Moon.[1]
- October 2 - Marthandam Elakiya Peravai [Marthandam Literature Forum] is about to conduct Gandhi Jayanthi celebration on 2nd October 2008 at Bethlehem College, Karungal,Kanyakumari District.[2]
- October 4 - The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta begins, starting the 9 day celebration that is the biggest in the world with more than 750 balloons.
- October 6 - The NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft will make its second last flyby of Mercury, decreasing the velocity for orbital insertion on March 18, 2011.[3]
- October 10 - On STS-125, the Space Shuttle Atlantis will conduct the last servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. It will be one of the most advanced missions in space.[4][5][6]
- October 13 - Columbus Day (observed) in many U.S. states.
- October 14 - The 40th Canadian General Election is held to elect members to the Canadian House of Commons of the 40th Canadian Parliament.
- October 21 - Official inauguration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is a collaboration of over eight-thousand physicists from over eighty-five countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.[7]
- October 30 – November 16 - The inaugural FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup will be held in New Zealand.[8]
