The English suffix -cide denotes an act related to killing. From Latin caedere "to cut, kill, hack (at), strike". In its wider meaning, it may also signify the destruction or dismantling of an object or concept. When attached to a word indicating an animal or plant considered to be pestilent, the combined word is frequently used to indicate a substance used to eliminate the pest in question. E.g. Pesticide, insecticide and herbicide

  • Acaricide: The killing of mites and ticks, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Algaecide/Algicide: The killing of algae, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Autocide: death to oneself as caused by oneself (auto- derived from the Greek autos meaning self); cf. suicide (sui- derived from the Latin sui meaning of oneself). Alternatively, suicide by means of, especially crashing, one's automobile (auto- as a contraction of the word automobile — itself meaning self motion).
  • Avicide: The killing of birds, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Avunculicide: The killing of one's uncle.

  • Barbicide : A chemical compound used by barbers to disinfect combs, brushes, etc.

  • Democide: An act of killing perpetrated by a government. (literally killing cide of the people demos)

  • Gendercide: The systematic killing of members of a specific sex.
  • Germicide: The killing of germs, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Gynaecide, gynecide: The killing of women.

  • Vivicide: The destruction and caused cessation of any and/or all forms of life; not dependent on quantity, severity or scale of annihilation; suffice it that life was stopped intentionally.
  • Vulpicide: The killing of a fox by means other than hunting with hounds.
