She was laid down in 1939, under Maritime_Commission contract (Hull Sun-60), by the Sun_Shipbuilding_and_Drydock_Company, Chester,_Pennsylvania, launched on 18_December 1940, and transferred from the United_States_Navy to the Royal Navy in 1940. She carried out some aircraft ferry operations in the Mediterranean then returned to the United_Kingdom to start the real task. In March 1943, she embarked the Fairey_Swordfish of 811 Naval Air Squadron of the Fleet_Air_Arm and carried out operations escorting Convoys. In January 1945, HMS ''Biter'' was retransferred to the French_Navy as ''Dixmude''. She subsequently saw action in Indo-China in 1946-48.
