Bub, the first figure from the "Day of the Dead", set to be released. Final images and VIDEO inside!

I've never understood why some people say that "Day of the Dead" was the worst of George Romero's original zombie trilogy. It was always my favorite and by a pretty good margin, too. Well, the film will soon be celebrated by a line of 8" action figures from Amok Time and the first one is almost set to be released. Bub, the popular, iconic zombie from the film, will be the first, and final product images are now available.

Bub will be a deluxe figure and include a display base, extra arm, gun, razor, headphones, tape deck and "reward bucket". It looks like the only thing missing is a Stephen King novel. I don't know if that's just an oversight or if it's for legal reasons, but I'm guessing the latter.

Bub is set to be released in late October/early November and will retail for $14.99. The second figure in the line will be the "Dr. Tongue" zombie and that will follow in 2009. Here's a shot of the guys from Amok Time with "Day of the Dead" FX legends Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero, showing off both figures.

If that doesn't whet your appetite, check out this stop motion video! Stop motion rules!

Great figure! Looking forward to this and Doctor Tongue.

I liked Day...but I think only because I'd seen it so often as a kid (so it holds a nostalgic place in my heart, right alongside Return of the Living Dead). I think if I'd only seen it as an adult, however, I may not like it as much. The gore was great for the time and the foreboding mood was well done...but I'm just not digging this whole theme of "humanizing" zombies that Romero uses. Like, Romero's using zombies to tell some allegory about class struggle or something.

I just want crazy, feral people chasing and eating normal people, damnit!

That's the thing I hated most about Land of the Dead. Come one...zombies getting smarter and "evolving"? Then what's the disadvantage to being a zombie??? You're immortal...AND you'll eventually be smart!? SIGN ME UP!! ;)

Oh, I totally agree, but I think that's more of a complaint against "Land" than "Day". Bub doesn't just suddenly get smart like the zombies do in "Land". He's taught, like an animal. That was an interesting idea to me that was ruined in the next entry by changing the circumstances in which the zombies become smart and trying to make them out to be some sort of oppressed class or something. The smart zombie idea was actually used to much greater, although comedic, effect in "Fido", where they actually were an oppressed class.

I think I mentioned this one before, but the idea of zombies who are immortal AND smart was handled in the SOV classic "Shatter Dead", where people were actually killing themselves to become zombies! Great idea. It's just too bad the film wasn't more professionally done. I'd love to see a remake. (Did I just say that?)
