Per Ciljan Skjelbred (born June 16, 1987) is a Norwegian footballer (midfielder) who currently plays for Rosenborg B.K.

Skjelbred started his career at local football club Trygg/Lade. He made an impression, and was selected to compete in a football talent competition entitled Proffdrømmen on Norwegian TV3. Skjelbred won this competition and its first prize, a week's training with Liverpool F.C.[1] He was offered a junior contract with the club, but declined. Instead, he went to the Norwegian club Rosenborg B.K., where he soon made an impression. Skjelbred has been capped for the Norwegian under-16, 17, 18, 19, 21, and the senior national teams.

On May 22, 2005, Skjelbred became the youngest player in the Norwegian Tippeligaen to receive a red card, against Molde F.K.

After scoring a goal in the first match of the 2005 Champions League against Olympiacos, he was tackled in the return match at Lerkendal on November 23 by Ieroklis Stoltidis. Both bones in Skjelbred's lower leg snapped just above the ankle. Although he went in with both legs and had no chance of getting the ball, Stoltidis said he had not meant to harm Skjelbred.[2] Skjelbred returned to football March 10, 2006 in Rosenborg B.K.'s match against Aalesunds Fotballklubb, playing the first half of the match which Rosenborg B.K. won 5-1.

Skjelbred also attends the football academy at KVT in Tiller.

His brother, Jakob Ciljan Skjelbred, also had a great potential as a footballer, but he moved to Warsaw Poland to start his medical studies. He now play for the University team and is the most talented player with 15 goals in 10 matches.

In October 2007, Per Ciljan Skjelbred was named as one of the world's 50 biggest talents by Italian football magazine Guerin Sportivo [3].

Per Ciljan Skjelbred is well known to the fans of the Football Manager series. In the two most recent games in the series, he has been given a very high potential rating, which often makes him a future star as the game progresses.

Per Ciljan Skjelbred was in the transfer window before the 2008/2009 football season heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United of the Premier League. Though as the window ended on September 1st, a transfer had not happened. Rumors have since transpired that it was then manager of Newcastle United, Kevin Keegan who had turned down Skjelbred at the last minute, something which had made the self-proclaimed Newcastle United fan very dissapointed [4].
