He is an ethnic Russian. He was Deputy Prime Minister under Kurmanbek_Bakiyev and was made acting PM on May_22 2002 after Bakiyev was sacked. He officially became PM eight days later when he was confirmed by parliament. Tanayev was born in Mihailovka village in Penzenskaya oblast.
