The Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (also referred to as IIM Lucknow or IIML), was established in 1984, by the Government of India, as a national level school of excellence in management science. It was the fourth Indian Institute of Management to be established in India after IIM Calcutta, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Bangalore. It is situated at the outskirts of the historic and culturally rich city of Lucknow.

It is considered one of the premiere B schools in India. Over 170,000 people apply for IIML through the Common Aptitude Test each year for roughly 300 seats[citation needed].

The Institute has state-of-the-art computing and class-room facilities, supported by an extensive library of books, journals, films, and databases. IIML academic programmes are fully residential. The serene and pollution free campus is well equipped to meet all the essential requirements of its residents. The campus is spread across 200 acres (0.81 km2) located on the outskirts of Lucknow off the Lucknow-Sitapur road. IIML also has a satellite campus, located at NOIDA, developed primarily for executive education.

The campus has 14 hostels, consisting of all single-seater rooms with Wi-Fi, LAN and cooler facilities, in the respective rooms. The hostels also have a common tv room, tt tables and a snooker table.

There is also one centrally located football field, two tennis courts, one basketball court, number of badminton courts including one indoor court and a gym.

The college runs two full time residential programmes 1.Post Graduate Programme in Management(PGPM) & 2.Post Graduate Programme in Agri Business Management (PGPABM). A substantive number (about 50% of the batch) of students come with prior work experience. More than 80% of students are from engineering background coming mainly from premier engineering colleges of India like IITs, NITs, DCE, NSIT, BITS, MGIT etc. However, the batch of 2008-10 has seen a markedly different approach to selection, with the average work-ex of around 3 years. The student background is also varied, with people coming from equity research, investment banking, doctors, army men, entrepreneurs, media houses, and of course a large number from the IT sector background , as its students.

At the core of student Activities is "The Students' Council", elected student body which plans and implements students' activities. Various committees and clubs carry out all the student related activities inside and outside the campus. Committees include Placecom, Manfest, Index, Alcom, Media Relations (MRC), Industry Interaction (IIC), Bhavishya: The Social Initiatives Group, Team Synapse, Consulting Club, PRISM-The Marketing Cell, Innovision, Student Exchange Committee Members (STEX), SIGFI(Special Interest Group in Finance), OIG(Operations Interest Group), Abhiyan-The Entrepreneurship Cell, Oculus

Besides committees there are three different clubs namely 3.4 (The college band), Choreo Club, Credence Capital- Student run mutual funds.

The state of art library has a collection of about 35,000 books, 600 periodicals,900 E-Journals in different areas of management embracing social, political and economic environment. It remains open round-the-clock, all days of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays except for gazetted holidays.
