[edit] Club Career
[edit] Danubio
Ignacio's footballing career began at Uruguayan club Danubio who he represented in a total of 170 league games, during which he allotted 45 goals for the Montevideo-based club. During his time at Danubio, he won the Uruguyuan Premier Division with the club twice, first in the 2003/04 season and then again in the 2006/07 season. Because of his performances for the club, interest began to circulate around Ignacio. This led to a loan move to A.S. Monaco, for whom he made five appearances, scoring a single goal in the process before Valencia of the Spanish La Liga revealed an interest in him.
[edit] Newcastle United
On 1 September 2008, Ignacio joined Newcastle United on loan for the 2008/09 season after only joining Valencia in the summer.[1] He made his debut in the 2-1 home defeat to Hull City.
However, González picked up a serious achilles tendon injury two weeks later (with only two appearances under his belt), ruling him out of playing action for four months, meaning he wouldn't feature for the North East club until well into 2009.[2]
[edit] International career
Ignacio made his debut for the Uruguay national side in a 2-1 defeat to England in 2006, coming on as a late substitute at Anfield. He was part of the 2007 Copa America squad which finished 4th. In the semi final against Brazil, Gonzalez was brought on at half time and was part of the team which fought back to 2-2 to take the game into extra time. Although he scored a penalty in the shoot-out, Uruguay lost 5-4 and were eliminated. His first international goal came in a 3-1 friendly win over Japan on 20th August 2008 at the Sapporo Dome.
