In general, since Wikipedia is a wiki, users should be aware that they can fix problems they find themselves (and are encouraged to go ahead and do so), or seek dispute resolution if this is contested.

Users have two main ways to contact Wikipedia:

  • The editorial community is responsible for almost all decisions about article content, and handling of editorial disputes. There are a large number of dispute resolution processes in place to help with these. In the vast majority of cases, disputes are resolved by the community, according to communally agreed policies and guidelines, using these processes.
  • The OTRS email system allows certain kinds of problems to be examined by a team of volunteers who are experienced in editorial matters and other problems that might affect our contributors and end users. OTRS is also a good option for cases where maintaining a level of confidentiality is important.

Routine editorial decisions are usually made by the editorial community; OTRS team members will gladly advise and will take action in certain cases, but do not normally override communal decisions (in which all readers and users can participate) unless exceptional considerations or concerns are relevant.

Note that due to their sensitivity, problems that relate to biographies and other articles discussing living people, raised by the person concerned or their representative, may always be raised by OTRS email at the first instance, if desired.
