Please note that these are the top grossing films that were first released in 2004; because they may have made most of their income in a later year, they may not be the top-grossing films for calendar year 2004.
The controversial film, The Passion of the Christ, helmed by Mel Gibson became the first blockbuster motion picture of 2004. Taking only eight days, Spider-Man 2 became the fastest film to reach $200 million in North American gross box office sales while Shrek 2 became the highest-grossing animated film and Fahrenheit 9/11 becomes the highest-grossing documentary in history, respectively.
