Ireland and Northampton Saints back row Neil Best has received an 18 week suspension after pleading guilty to "eye-gouging".
Best was cited fro making contact with the eye or “eye area” of London Wasps’ player James Haskell in a Premiership game on Saturday, 20 September.
Haskell was brought to hospital and treated for abrasions and swelling around his eyes.
The former Ulster player will be unavailable for selection until the 28 January and will miss all of the Saints’ six European Challenge Cup Pool Rounds matches
The suspension also rules Best out of the Ireland squad for upcoming November tests.
Northampton Saints will play their first European Challenge Cup game away in Toulon on Thursday, 9 October at 8.45 pm live on Sky Sports and France 4.
