Salvadoran Americans are residents of the United States of Salvadoran descent. As of 2006 there are roughly 1.37 million Salvadoran Americans in the United States, the fourth largest Hispanic community by nation of ancestry.[2]

The majority of Salvadoran Americans reside in the Washington Metropolitan Area: Washington, D.C.; Maryland; and Northern Virginia. There is also a large number in Houston, Austin, Dallas, and in California, such as the Greater Los Angeles area and the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition, there is a significant number of Salvadoran Americans in the New York City area such as Northern New Jersey, Flushing, Queens and Long Island.

[edit] Immigration

The exodus of Salvadorans was a result of both economic and political problems. The largest immigration wave occurred as a result of the Salvadoran Civil War in the 1980s, in which 20%-30% of El Salvador's population emigrated. About 50% percent, or up to 500,000 of those who escaped headed to the U.S., which was already home to over 10,000 Salvadorans.[3]
