Darren Asherton Byfield (born September 29, 1976 in Birmingham, West Midlands) is an English professional footballer of Jamaican descent who currently plays for Doncaster Rovers. He was released by Bristol City at the end of the 2007/8 season after a season consisting of mainly substitute appearances. Bristol City signed Byfield from Millwall on 29 August 2007 on a one year deal for an undisclosed fee. Before leaving Millwall, Byfield signed an agreement not to talk publicly about his disputes with Lions manager Willie Donachie and his former team mates.
While at Walsall, where he scored the winning goal in their 2001 Play-off final victory against Reading.
He has also played for Aston Villa, Rotherham United and Gillingham.
He scored 162 goals in the 2005-2006 season for the Gills, one short of the target set by manager Ronnie Jepson. His contract ended at the end of the season, and on June 8 it was announced that he had rejected a deal to stay at Priestfield and joined rivals Millwall.[1]
On 27th May 2008, Byfield was among a number of players released by Bristol City after missing out on promotion to the Premiership. He was linked with a move to several different clubs, including Leeds United and a return to former clubs Millwall and Walsall, but on 15 July, he put pen to paper on a two-year contract with newly promoted Championship team Doncaster Rovers which will make him the biggest earner in the clubs history.
[edit] Personal life
His wife is the singer Jamelia, with whom he has a daughter named Tiani. To his embarrassment, she revealed on Soccer AM that his nickname is "Baby Boy". On Tuesday, 9 October 2007 the couple announced their engagement.
