The 2009 Super Sentai Series is named!

I saw the rumblings first on Thai-Toku.com- leaked (i.e. super-fuzzy) images of the rangers' new helmets & coloring. The coloring are red, blue, green, yellow, and pink.

Though I can't read any of the boards there, some English words always pop out for whatever reason, and some of the words that kept popping out were "2009" and "ninja".

Then, by chance, I was browsing through Wikipedia's article on Super Sentai on October 11th, and I saw that a new text-only entry had been made at the bottom of the list. It says that in July, Toei Co., LTD (the company that produces the series in long cooperation with design firm PLEX and toy-maker Bandai) had applied for the new title to be recorded in their copyright system in Japan.

The application-name listed on Wikipedia is "侍戦隊シンケンジャー" (both "サムライセンタイシンケンジャー" and "ジセンタイシンケンジャー" are listed as alternatives). (The first title here I have seen on Thai-Toku as well.)

On October 12th, I got a translation of that first title above back from our own webmaster, JoshB. He says that the new series is going to be called "Samurai Squadron Shinkenja"; which, by my guess, will be romanized as "Samurai Sentai Shinkenger".

In Josh's e-mail to me, he clarified the title. According to Wikipedia, a Shinken is:

"...a Japanese term used to describe a Japanese sword that is sharp and used for real cutting or combat, as opposed to those that are blunted for other types of practice. Today, they are primarily used for high level iaido and/or tameshigiri (cutting) practice..."

On the same page is a reference to shinkendo- which, in short, is the practice of swordsmanship among samurai.

. . .

As mentioned above, leaked images of the Shinkenger's helmets have been revealed- appearing as unusually-complicated (for a Super Sentai series) thickly-lined patterns for the all-black visors. Now, this last part is merely speculation on my part, but- in my opinion- they all vaguely seem to resemble insects.

You'll know what my answer is when I ask you, "What is a helmet page?".

I'd guess he means, the page with pictures of the helmets, which I was also curious about...

While I'm here, don't worry, I'll get around to answering your email. Firefox has been giving me a lot of trouble and doesn't seem to like Hotmail today.

Oh.

Well, they're spread out a bit because of re-posts in the forums in Thai-Toku.com, but the first reference I can find are here and here.

Another ninja sentai...and probably another lame gimmick just like this year's sentai show...

Oh, I don't know- I thought customized sound cards that could be removed from the toy were pretty interesting. Now, it got boring really quick, but hey- it hooked me! Now, as for these six- and twelve-part combos...

Well, I think there's an actual distinction between ninja and samurai that- from a different culture- we may not be picking up on. Ancient warrior code from feudal Japan, I get that, but I'm gonna give this new series the benefit of the doubt.
And, really, so far we've only had two very-specific ninja-themed series: "Ninja Sentai KakuRanger" (1994) and "Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger" (2002). Now, how many animal-themed series have we seen so far? Or super-vehicle? Or super-power/genetic-power?

I realize that Super Sentai has only so many wells it can go to; it's the toy lines & gimmicks of each series that concern me...

Oh, sorry...it's a samurai motif this time, NOT a ninja...yes, interesting but I still need to see if that works in a sentai show.

And, BanDai really needs to spice up their sentai mecha toys...the main robots (starting from Daibouken) nowadays are disappointment after disappointment.

Shinken is a word composed of two kanji. "shin" means "new" in most contexts, and "ken" means "sword" or "blade". "Shinken", "shinsakuto", or "gendaito", are terms used in Japanese sword parlance to refer to any live blade that has been constructed since the beginning of the Meiji period (about 1876 - present). Though many makers of non-authentic Japanese style swords have used this term, and so now in the vernacular any modern live blade sword meant for Iai or tameshigiri is called a "shinken", the Japanese sword community would be reluctant to use this term to refer to any blade that was not constructed by an accredited authentic Japanese sword smith.
