A district is an administrative division of a state in India. India is divided into twenty-eight states, six Union territories (UT) and one national capital territory. Each state or UT is subdivided into districts for administration purposes. Currently India has 610 districts. The power to change district borders, create new districts or merge existing districts lies with respective state government.
